My daughter writes long stories and wants to know how to get them published. Any advice?

Though age 'technically' does not play a role in publishing (because if a publisher finds the material 'buyable' they will accept it) but at the same time it does, for when an aspiring writer attempts to pick up a publisher, the publisher will most likely look to see if the prospective writer has any publishing credentials.

So if we're talking long stories as in novel size - I would first advise to perhaps start smaller. It is plausible to get a publisher without credentials, but you have to start somewhere in the publishing world and more often than not the best place is to start small. But if she fancies taking the big leap to book publishing - Writer's Market 2008 will answer a lot of your quesitons.

But if we're talking long stories as in short stores - the advice would be to do two things: keep a file with the stories and set them aside so she can continue to write, because the best advice to give an aspiring writer is to 'keep writing.' If you by chance already have a file configured, I would select what could be considered her strongest one, edit it, then look for legit. competitions to submit them to. You could certainly try local areas if you know of anything - I know my local paper sometimes sends out ads requesting for young writers to join them.

Higher up leagues would be magazines - Writer's Digest is constantly holding competitions that you could look into.

Good luck.

Getting a publisher these days is harder than impossible. So the best thing to do is go to a literary agent. They cost nothing and it's their job to approach publishers. But before you do this, find someone to edit the stories. It doesn't matter how good your daughter is, it's always best to get someone else to do the final edit on a story.

Here is an example of a literary agent:

Hi,

The first link is a blog writen in spanish and english and I'm sure that your daughter will appreciate it :

This one is more technical :

Here she can take a look at original versions, namely Alice :

Now, publishing a book must be kind of complicated, but you can offer her a book with her own stories and pictures.

Two known services are :

usual at school, they will have writing contests every so offen, and the winners get their stories, poems, essays etc, published. Get her to ask her school! And good luck to your daughter!
Great question. I'm trying to publish books too.
